Old clothes in a new shine

If you’re currently on Instagram and the like, you can’t miss it, whether it’s the playful floral dresses from the 70s, the flashy colourful tracksuits from the 80s or the band shirts with all-over prints from the 90s.

For some years now, vintage clothes have been experiencing such a revival that one can no longer speak of a hype, but more of a movement.

This is evident not least in the fact that, after small retailers led the way in selling vintage clothing (= approx. 20 years and older), the big fast fashion giants like H&M and Zara are now also jumping on the bandwagon.

But what makes vintage clothes like the ones you can buy in our SHOP so special and why is the whole topic so appealing?

It’s the young people who buy vintage clothes. In today’s fast-paced world, these young people want to stand out and express their individuality. Doing something good for the environment and looking cool at the same time makes the whole thing perfect.

And that is exactly what is possible by buying old clothes.

The attraction? The good feeling when buying, because the clothes are

  • sustainable
  • high quality
  • limited
  • cross-stylistic

The last point in particular, that the clothes are cross-style, is striking.

People jump through the decades with their outfits and even combine garments from different decades completely freely with each other.

Perhaps this can be seen to some extent as a liberation from trends set by the fashion industry, in line with the motto: “Long live individualism!”

The fact is, clothes are being sold en masse and more and more.

From the collectors, the goods go to the vintage fashion wholesalers like us, Vintage Fiasco, and from there via the retailers to the end customers.

To return to the question of what makes the subject so appealing.

It’s the freedom to combine rare high-quality clothing according to one’s own wishes without having to pay vast sums of money for it.

And for this very reason, vintage fashion will be a topic that will not disappear any time soon.

How sustainable is vintage or second-hand fashion?

When we think of vintage and second-hand fashion, we often think of sustainability.

But how sustainable is it really to shop second hand? And what about fair fashion?

First of all, a brief overview of the clothing cycle, from production to the end customer:

After the clothes have been produced, they end up in our wardrobes via retail sales or online shops. When it is time for us to get rid of bad buys and unworn clothes, the items end up in the old clothes collection. From there, the clothes are pre-sorted into clothing and accessories such as shoes, belts, hats, etc.
The clothes are then sorted again. In the post-sorting stage, the clothes are then sorted according to quality, brands, trends, intactness and cleanliness.
Clothing that is still usable is packed for resale and sold to wholesalers (VintageFiasco) and shipped. The clothes are sorted again and sold to other traders. Afterwards, the goods end up again in the wardrobes of the end customers as second-hand fashion.

It’s quite a long way that vintage fashion has to go by the time it reaches the buyer.
So the process of transport and the long supply chains are not necessarily very sustainable.
Another point to consider when buying vintage and second hand is the mostly unfair conditions of the production of the clothes.
You continue to indirectly support these by buying the fashion. However, the difference between second-hand and vintage is that second-hand fashion is often not old and high-quality clothing. Vintage fashion, on the other hand, is at least 20 years old, so that the garment was not bought last year and has already been sorted out again. In terms of longevity, vintage fashion is definitely above second-hand fashion.

Buying vintage fashion is resource-friendly in that you buy clothes that have already been produced and continue to use them. If we look at fair fashion labels, the positive values here definitely lie in the socially sustainable production and the fair working conditions of the workers. In addition, materials are used that have been grown sustainably and ecologically. However, this production also consumes resources and the fair working conditions are also reflected in the price.

Vintage, second hand or fair fashion? So what is the best and most sustainable option?

The best purchase decision is probably still to consume consciously and to focus on quality and thus on longevity. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type of consumption. But if everyone would cut down on mass consumption and question purchasing decisions more, we can all contribute to the conservation of our valuable resources.

Wie nachhaltig ist Vintage bzw. Second Hand Mode wirklich?

Beim Thema „Vintage und Second Hand Mode“ denken wir auch oft an Nachhaltigkeit.
Doch wie nachhaltig ist es wirklich, Second Hand zu shoppen? Und was ist mit Fair Fashion?

Zunächst einmal ein kurzer Überblick über den Kleiderkreislauf, von der Produktion bis zum Endkunden:

Nach der Produktion der Kleidung landet sie über den Verkauf im Einzelhandel oder Online Shops in unseren Kleiderschränken. Nachdem es für uns mal wieder an der Zeit ist sich von Fehlkäufen und ungetragenen Kleidungsstücken zu trennen, landen die Sachen in der Altkleidersammlung. Von dort aus wird die Kleidung vorsortiert in Kleidung und Accessoires wie Schuhe, Gürtel, Hüte etc. In der Nachsortierung wird dann nach Qualität, Marken, Trends, Intaktheit und Sauberkeit sortiert. Noch brauchbare Kleidung wird zum Weiterverkauf verpackt und an Großhändler (VintageFiasco) verkauft und verschickt. Die Kleidung wird erneut sortiert und an andere Händler verkauft. Danach landet die Ware dann als Second Hand Mode erneut in den Kleiderschränken der Endkunden.

Ein ganz schön langer Weg, den die Vintage Mode hinter sich hat, wenn sie beim Käufer ankommt. Somit ist der Prozess des Transportes und der langen Lieferketten nicht unbedingt sehr nachhaltig. Ein weiterer Punkt, der beim Kauf von Vintage und Second Hand zu beachten ist, sind die meist unfairen Bedingungen der Herstellung der Kleidung. Diese unterstützt man indirekt weiterhin durch den Kauf der Mode. Dabei ist jedoch der Unterschied zwischen Second Hand und Vintage, dass Second Hand Mode eben aus „zweiter Hand“ oftmals keine alte und qualitativ hochwertige Kleidung ist. Hingegen ist Vintage Mode mindestens 20 Jahre alt, sodass das Kleidungsstück nicht im letzten Jahr erst gekauft und nun schon wieder aussortiert wurde. In Sachen Langlebigkeit steht die Vintage Mode definitiv über der Second Hand Mode. 

Ressourcenschonend ist der Kauf von Vintage Mode insofern, dass man bereits produzierte Kleidung kauft und ihr weiterhin Verwendung schenkt. Wenn wir uns Fair Fashion Labels anschauen, dann liegen hier die positiven Werte auf jeden Fall in der sozial nachhaltigen Produktion und den fairen Arbeitsbedingungen der Arbeiter. Zudem werden Materialien verwendet, die nachhaltig und ökologisch angebaut wurden. Jedoch verbraucht auch diese Produktion Ressourcen und die fairen Arbeitsbedingungen spiegeln sich auch im Preis wider. 

Vintage, Second Hand oder Fair Fashion? Was ist denn nun die beste und nachhaltigste Option?

Die beste Kaufentscheidung liegt wohl immernoch darin, bewusst zu konsumieren und auf Qualität und somit auf Langlebigkeit zu setzen. Vor- und Nachteile sprechen für jede Art des Konsums. Doch wenn jeder die Masse an Konsum herunter schrauben würde und Kaufentscheidungen mehr hinterfragt, können wir alle einen Beitrag zur Schonung unserer wertvollen Ressourcen leisten.

Alte Kleidung im neuem Glanz

Wer aktuell auf Instagram und co. unterwegs ist dürfte wohl nicht mehr daran vorbeikommen, egal, ob es die verspielten Blumenkleider aus den 70ern, die schrillen bunten Trainingsanzüge aus den 80ern, oder die Bandshirts mit All Over Prints aus den 90ern sind.

Alte Kleidung erlebt seit mittlerweile einigen Jahren ein derartiges Revival, dass man nicht mehr von einem Hype, sondern mehr von einer Bewegung sprechen kann. 

Das zeigt sich nicht zuletzt darin, dass, nachdem kleine Einzelhändler den Verkauf der Vintage Kleidung (= ca.20 Jahre und älter) vorgemacht haben, jetzt auch die großen Fast Fashion Riesen wie H&M und Zara auf den Zug mit aufspringen.

Aber was macht Vintage Kleidung wie man sie bei uns im SHOP kaufen kann so besonders und warum ist das ganze Thema so reizvoll?

Es sind die jungen Leute, die Vintage Kleidung kaufen. Diese jungen Leute wollen in der schnelllebigen Welt von heute vor allem auffallen und ihre Individualität zum Ausdruck bringen. Dabei etwas Gutes für die Umwelt tun und auch noch cool aussehen macht das Ganze perfekt.

Und genau das ist mit dem Kauf der alten Kleidung möglich.

Der Reiz daran? Das Gute Gefühl beim Kauf, denn die Kleidung ist

  • nachhaltig
  • hochwertig
  • limitiert
  • stilübergreifend

Gerade der Letzte Punkt, dass die Kleidung stilübergreifend ist, ist auffällig.

Die Menschen springen in den Jahrzehnten mit ihren Outfits und kombinieren sogar Kleidungsstücke aus verschiedenen Jahrzehnten völlig frei miteinander. 

Vielleicht kann man das ein Stück weit als Befreiung von Trends, die durch die Modeindustrie sehen, ganz nach dem Motto: „Es lebe der Individualismus!“

Fakt ist, die Kleidung wird massenhaft und immer mehr verkauft.

Vom Sammelbetrieben geht die Ware zu den Vintage-Fashion Wholesalern wie wir, Vintage Fiasco, und von da über die Retailer an die Endkunden.

Um zur Frage zurück zu kommen, was das Thema so reizvoll macht.

Es ist die Freiheit seltene hochwertige Kleidung nach eigenen Wünschen kombinieren zu können, ohne dafür Unsummen zahlen zu müssen.

Und aus genau diesem Grund wird Vintage Mode ein Thema sein, dass so schnell nicht mehr verschwindet.
